The idea was in the air, or rather, the idea was already known. Make the start page (the one with which you start your surfing or browsing the Internet) individual. It should be not just a blank page of the browser or the initial page of your favorite Internet resource. It should contain exactly what you need all the time – for example, news, currency exchange rates, weather, access to search resources, updates of sites of interest to you. In short, exactly what you need only.
No online resource can fully meet your needs.
Creating your own start page is not easy – for this you need to be able to work with HTML, be able to connect RSS-feeds, install informers. A few months ago, an article about the Surfpack Startpage program was published on Softkey.info. This is a tool for forming the start page of your browser. Unlike the start pages, which offer separate sites to set up their pages, you create this page with the help of this program. However, it can be changed at any time to suit your changing requirements.
But it turns out that such a start page can be created not only on your local computer. An identical opportunity now provides the search engine Google. Anyone with an account on this system can create their personalized start page. The login link for registered users is located in the upper right corner of the standard Google search page. Having entered the login and password, the standard start page of the search engine is converted into your personal page. The only thing you can not delete is the search block. Everything else can be changed by adding the necessary elements and removing unnecessary. Google provides tools for creating individual pages.
To form the necessary set of blocks, use the column in the left part of the window that opens (if it is missing, you can use the “Add content” link in the top part of the window). In this column – a list of the most popular categories in the sections “News”, “Sport”, “Business”, “Technology”, “Lifestyle” and “Entertainment”. But there is also a section that you can form independently. Sections contain pre-configured RSS feeds of known resources. For example, in the news channels are connected “Polit.ru”, “Arguments and Facts”, “NT.Nov.Novosti”. In order to add any of them to your page, just click on the “Add” button on the corresponding list.
The selected newsletter will appear on your personal page. Once all the necessary sections are added, they can be placed on the page as it will be more convenient for you. To move you need to click on the blue line of the section with the mouse pointer and, without releasing, drag to a new location. Each section has a “Configure” button. By selecting it, you can specify settings for this section. You can select, for example, the number of headlines displayed for Google news and other news sources and how many messages to display when previewing. You can get the weather forecast in your area by selecting a country and a city from the drop-down menu. Having created your page, you need to click “Edit” in any section to update the settings. (Note that you can switch from a standard search page to a personalized page and back at any time.)
Unlike the Surfpack Startpage, Google’s personalized page settings are stored in your account. Therefore, you can use your settings from any computer from where you will connect to the Internet. Therefore, an additional interest is the possibility of saving bookmarks on a personal page, or a set of links to your favorite websites. To create such a set, you need to place a link section on a personalized page. What else can be posted here? Everything related to Google.
A Google Account allows you to access various Google services, including Google Groups, Google notifications, Froogle Shopping List, Gmail and personalized search. Accordingly, access to these services can be organized through a personalized page.
Having placed on your page access to the postal service, you will always see the new letters received at your address and have access to them. (We have already written about Gmail itself in our publication.) What are Google notifications or, in other words, Google Alert? This is a service for sending messages about new search results to your address for your regular requests. There are three search options – in the newsletters, the Internet, or both. Messages are sent to you in the event that a new article from the newsletter falls into the top ten search results, and when searching the Internet – if the new page hits the top twenty results.
