Good site rules
You need a website and you want it to be good and visited. But what are the criteria that determine the quality level of the site? We throw aside advertising and beliefs and leave only the basic axioms that are suitable for a corporate site. 10 rules – this is not a complete list of requirements. But for now, let’s stop on them …
The site must contain information. Probably, you already read about it many times? Then, read it again and think about it – the site should contain INFORMATION. It is because of her users seek the Internet. The more specific information, the easier it is to collect a large audience of its visitors. A good example of this approach is information resources containing a large amount of materials on a specific topic and having their own domain name (corresponding to the information contained in it), created by firms separately from their corporate sites and domain names. And already advertising and specific links from it attract users to their “business” site.
Although, there is a saying that the clothes are met, I made this item the second after the information. But this does not mean that the design of the site is less important. The first thing that begins to evaluate the site is its appearance, and only then draw conclusions, studying the content. The history of image advertising already exists for about 200 years (not with us, of course), and that means a lot. Site – the face of the company in the Internet, and the quality of the design will judge you. In addition to accurate execution, there are many more rules that must be considered. There are technical subtleties, for example – the weight (size) of graphic files, the justification of using certain technologies. And there are more hidden ones: aesthetic value, creativity, correctness and compatibility of color balance, literacy of proportions and perspectives in terms of volume and lighting. Plus, a little psychology – the correct associative perception of graphic design, in accordance with the theme of the site and color solution. Often, this question is more important than it seems at first glance.
3. Structure and Navigation Convenience
If the value of information can be compared with a diamond, the design with its rim (although, sometimes diamonds are only a part of the jewel), then the structure and navigation can be compared with the cut of a stone (true, when cut, a stone loses weight). A good site is carefully thought out. The user should easily understand the structure of the site from its menu, and the site navigation tools should be clear. Well, when navigation takes into account not only the sections of the site, but also the convenience of working with each page. A good site should not have “empty” pages with reports of ongoing work on the content.
4. Grammar and style in the text.
Errors, typos and poor literary style in the text are not allowed on the site. Failure to follow the rules of text layout, selection of fonts and their size also reduces its evaluation by the user.
5. Updating and updating content
For users to constantly return to you, the site must be “alive”. Updating outdated information and updating the new one should be carried out regularly. It is very good when it is entrusted to a specific person or team. Often, this leads to regular expenses – payment of a qualified specialist (web master) or regular payments for the “support” of the site.
6. High-quality programming
The world is diverse. And the Internet too. There are various browsers and many versions of them, users have different monitor sizes and different screen resolutions, there are different text encodings and different fonts. But all this should not be a hindrance between the user and your site. A good site should not contain extra code, and software solutions should work without errors.
The Internet allows you to communicate in both directions. The user can always make a request or question if there are email addresses. A timely response will leave a good impression about the site and its owners. Various software solutions on your site can further enhance interactivity.
8. Proper indexing and promotion.
Most users find the necessary information in search engines and link directories. A good site should contain the necessary keywords and description for search engines, taking into account the effective response to the user’s request. And the ongoing advertising campaign should not use spam.
9. Neat attitude to advertising on the site
I have already said that placing banner advertising systems on a corporate website is like advertising stickers from taxi cars on a 600 Mercedes. Especially dangerous to make them in the design of pages. In the advertising system can run various banners, both in appearance and in content. A ridiculous situation may arise if advertising for a competitor or a free “content” site appears next to your logo. I remember an example when our clients showed a color printout (specially printed out for memory) from the site of their competitor. The place for the banner was inserted into the design of the page and the name of the company was supplemented with the phrase: “there are always good girls here.” And the color scheme of the banner completely coincided with the design of the site.
The site using other materials and design, does not cause approval. Always coordinate with the authors your desire to place on your site the material you like. Usually, there are no objections if the source is indicated, the author and the link is not his resource. But, in any case, ask permission to use and remember that there is copyright law.
True, I am already tired of fighting this situation. My caricatures roam all over the Runet, they are even signed by someone else’s domain name. There are quite well-known sites that use other people’s work, without mentioning their authors, creating a good popularity for themselves. When the time comes, be sure to take care of this issue.
0. Accommodation on the Internet
Site placement is also a very important issue. A corporate website or information resource that does not have a domain name cannot be respected. Placing a site on free servers is a reason to think about the seriousness of the company. Another subtlety is the bandwidth of the channel from the host provider and its distance from the potential audience (for example, if the server is physically located in the USA). All this translates into the speed of loading your site. Also, a question of no small importance is convenience and ways of communication with the technical support service. And, of course, a list of services and opportunities (databases, active pages, etc.), the amount of space provided and the price.
